Turkmenistan is one of the hardest countries in the region to visit — which is exactly why it’s worth it for travelers who have already seen classic Uzbekistan and want something genuinely rare: ancient Merv, a white-marble capital, and a burning crater in the Karakum desert.
Route
Bukhara → border crossing → Mary → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat → Darvaza gas crater → border crossing → Khiva → Urgench.
Day by day
- Arrival in Bukhara, check-in, free evening.
- Bukhara: Ark fortress, Poi-Kalyan ensemble, Samanid mausoleum, Lyab-i Hauz.
- Cross the Uzbek-Turkmen border, drive to Mary via Turkmenabat.
- Ancient Merv — a 2,500+ year old archaeological site: Erk-Kala citadel, the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, the Kyz-Kala fortresses. Drive to Ashgabat on the new highway.
- Ashgabat: the Arch of Neutrality, the Oguzkhan palace complex, the Nisa archaeological site. In the evening, drive into the Karakum desert to the Darvaza crater, overnight in a yurt camp.
- Cross the Turkmen-Uzbek border, drive to Khiva.
- Khiva: Ichan-Kala, Kunya-Ark fortress, Tash-Khauli palace, Islam-Khoja minaret.
- Transfer to Urgench airport, departure.
