Darvaza Express — Khiva, Ashgabat, Mary, Merv, Bukhara — 3 Days
Three days, two airports, one 70-meter fire pit burning in the desert — and you walk out on the Uzbek side of the border in Bukhara having seen more of Turkmenistan than many travelers manage in a week. This trip is for anyone who wants the “highlight reel” version of the country: not deep immersion, but the strongest points on the map without the downtime in between.
Route
Khiva → border crossing → the Darvaza crater → Ashgabat → Mary → Ancient Merv → Bukhara.
Why this tour
- The fastest way to see Darvaza, Ashgabat and Merv together — usually a week-long undertaking.
- A convenient “bridge” between Khiva and Bukhara: instead of an ordinary drive inside Uzbekistan, you cross an entire neighboring country.
- A night by the burning crater — the single best photo of the trip, and you get it on day one.
- A one-way route with no backtracking saves time otherwise lost to driving.
Day by day
- Meet at the west gate of Ichan-Kala in Khiva, cross the Uzbek-Turkmen border, a light lunch, a 4x4 drive across the Karakum desert to the Darvaza crater. Sunset at the crater, a fire-cooked dinner, a night in a yurt camp under the stars.
- Drive to Ashgabat — the Arch of Neutrality, the Oguzkhan palace complex, a walk through the most white-marble city on the planet.
- Flight to Mary, a tour of Ancient Merv — a settlement that was one of the largest cities in the world two thousand years ago, drive to Bukhara across the border.
