Turkmenistan Visa: How to Get a Letter of Invitation (LOI)
You can’t just show up with a visa application for Turkmenistan — you first need a Letter of Invitation (LOI), and only then can a visa be issued, either at the border or at an embassy.
What an LOI is
An LOI is official confirmation from the Turkmen side that you’re expected and your itinerary has been approved. No LOI means no visa — it’s not a formality, it’s a requirement.
How to get an LOI
An LOI is arranged by a licensed Turkmen tour operator — tourists can’t apply for one on their own. The process takes 2 to 4 weeks, so a Turkmenistan trip needs to be planned well in advance.
After you have the LOI
With an approved LOI, the visa can be issued:
- At the border on arrival (the most common option for tour groups)
- At a Turkmenistan embassy in your home country, if one exists
What to keep in mind
- The LOI is tied to specific dates and an itinerary — last-minute changes are difficult
- At the border, you’ll also pay a migration fee and sometimes an express test
- Independent travelers (without an escort) have a much harder time getting an LOI and visa — tour operators usually require a group or an accompanying guide
Turkmenistan’s visa rules change periodically — confirm the current requirements when booking your tour.
