Souvenirs From Uzbekistan: What to Bring Home and What to Skip

Uzbekistan is rich in crafts, but not every souvenir travels equally well.

Definitely worth buying

Ceramics from Rishtan and Gijduvan — light, durable with careful packing, with their distinctive blue or green patterns. Dried fruit and nuts — especially dried apricots and almonds of a quality hard to find back home. Silk scarves and suzani textiles — compact, versatile gifts. Spices by weight — take up little space and keep for a long time.

What to buy with caution

Carpets and large textiles — beautiful, but need separate packing and luggage space. Knives from Chust — not formally banned, but check your airline’s rules on hand luggage and checked bags.

What usually stays unpacked

Magnets and generic “tourist” souvenirs that look the same as in any other country — it’s more interesting to bring back something authentically local.

Where to buy

The best value is at bazaars, buying directly from craftspeople, rather than at hotel souvenir shops where prices are usually higher.

Luggage rules change — confirm current restrictions with your airline.
