Samarkand in One Day: a Route for Travelers Passing Through
Samarkand deserves two or three days, but if you only have one, this route covers the essentials without rushing too much.
Morning: Registan Square
Start at Registan Square while tour groups are still thin — the best time for photos and a calm look at all three madrasahs without the crowds.
Midday: Gur-Emir and Bibi-Khanym
The Gur-Emir mausoleum, Tamerlane’s tomb, is a 10-minute walk from Registan. Nearby is the Bibi-Khanym mosque, built in honor of Tamerlane’s favorite wife.
Afternoon: Shah-i-Zinda
The Shah-i-Zinda necropolis — a corridor of turquoise mausoleums — often leaves a stronger impression than Registan itself. Budget at least an hour here.
Evening: Siyob bazaar and sunset at Registan
The Siyob bazaar near Bibi-Khanym is a great spot for souvenirs and local sweets. Head back to Registan for sunset — the evening lighting makes the square feel completely different.
If you have extra time
The Ulugbek Observatory and the Afrasiyab museum, for anyone interested in science and the pre-Tamerlane history of the city.
This route assumes walking between closely spaced sites — most are 15-20 minutes apart on foot.
