Khiva at Night: Where to Go After the Museums Close
Khiva is the only city on the classic route where the entire old town, Ichan-Kala, is enclosed by walls — which means in the evening it becomes an almost private space for whoever’s actually staying there.
Walking the walls without a ticket
After the ticket booths close, many sections of the fortress walls and the streets inside Ichan-Kala remain open for a free walk — no tour groups, different light, a different mood entirely.
The Kalta-Minor minaret, lit up
Evening lighting turns the short, “unfinished” Kalta-Minor minaret into one of the most photogenic spots in the city — especially during the blue hour right after sunset.
Rooftop dinner
Ichan-Kala has several rooftop cafes and restaurants where you get views of minarets and domes without having to go anywhere after dinner.
The quiet of the old town
The biggest difference at night is the silence. By day, bus groups pass through; by evening, most have left for Urgench or further on, and the city briefly belongs only to those staying overnight.
Specific cafe hours and monument lighting schedules can vary by season.
