Bukhara: What to See If You Only Have One Day
Unlike Samarkand, Bukhara’s historic center is compact — almost every major monument is within walking distance of the others, which makes a one-day visit realistic.
Morning: the Ark fortress and Poi-Kalyan
Start at the Ark fortress, the seat of Bukhara’s rulers for centuries. From there it’s a 10-minute walk to the Poi-Kalyan ensemble: the Kalyan minaret, the Kalyan mosque and the Mir-i-Arab madrasah.
Midday: the trading domes and Lyab-i Hauz
Walk through the old trading domes, where craftsmen and traders still work much as they did centuries ago. Continue to Lyab-i Hauz, a pond-side square surrounded by teahouses — a great spot for lunch.
Afternoon: the Samanid mausoleum
The 10th-century Samanid mausoleum, one of the oldest monuments in Central Asia, sits in a small park slightly off the main route, but it’s worth the 20-minute walk.
Evening: free time in the old town
Bukhara is especially good in the evening once the tour groups leave — the streets empty out and the city feels completely different.
Most sites are within a 15-20 minute walk of the old town center.
